Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some questions we get a lot of!

How are you going to deal with COVID-19?

We're always taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We will be regularly cleaning work surfaces, encouraging face masks and checking for vaccination/negative test on the door.

What's a hackathon?

Hackathons are programming competitions where people work together to make something cool over the course of a weekend.

Do I have to be studying Computer Science?

Nope!

Although being a computer scientist and/or knowing how to code helps, it's not required.

How much does it cost?

Β£0 and your weekend!

Royal Hackaway is free to attend, thanks to all the support provided from our sponsors!

Who owns my project?

All code is owned by you and your team members!
We recommend putting your project on GitHub, and making it open source.

Can I go home overnight/leave early?

You can leave during the event, but please check-in/out with our entry staff by presenting them the barcode found in your event card in your lanyard.

We do this for fire safety and accountability reasons.

Can I start before I join?

Absolutely not!

While you can explore ideas, you cannot start implementing your project before the specified time.

Do I need to come with a team?

If you don't have a team in mind before you come, you can make a team with anyone after the opening ceremonies, so no pressure!

Just note that team sizes are limited to a maximum of 4 (four) hackers per team.

Who can attend?

Anyone 18+ who is either a current university student or has graduated in the past six months.

How do I opt-out of being photographed?

We respect your privacy - You can opt out of being photographed by asking one of our committee members for an "opt-out" lanyard, to let us know that you do not wish to be photographed.

We'll try to do the following:

  1. Avoid taking photographs of people who have opted-out
  2. Delete photographs of those who have opted-out
  3. Triple check for people who have opted-out before publishing photographs

If you are from the future πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹ and have still found yourself in a photograph, let us know at [email protected]
